Beats For Trees

Turning shipbuilding ‘waste’ into musical instruments

The Beats for Trees program is an extension of our ‘Un-Waste management system’; offcuts from the shipbuilding division are transformed into quality musical instruments by local artisans. These are sold to local schools at cost price, or to the general public at market value, with all profits going to our ‘Trees for Seas’ reforestation program. Reforestation completes the circle in our regenerative model of shipbuilding by providing trees for future shipbuilding endeavors.

marimbas AND BEATBOXES

Marimbas and beat boxes are are traditional instruments in Costa Rica, in fact in 1996 the marimba was declared the national instrument of Costa Rica. In recent years the practice of marimberos (marimba makers) and marimbistas (marimba players) has declined. We aim to to keep the tradition of marimbas and beatboxes alive by providing the instruments to schools and employing a local artisan, helping to preserve cultural heritage.

Education

A major highlight of the Beats For Trees program is the educational curriculum. The schools which benefit from our discount also participate in our Trees For Seas tree planting program, where children are invited to learn how to plant trees. The local school groups also get a free tour of the shipyard to learn how the wood from the trees is used and where the offcuts used to create the musical instruments came from. Our objective is to teach the children and young people the fundamental principles of a circular economy.
