Trees for Seas

THE GOAL

12,500 trees planted by the time Ceiba sets sail.

PROGRESS: OVER 10,000 TREES PLANTED SO FAR

Seeds become saplings, become towering trees, become a sailing ship, and we return to the seeding.

Imagine a world where cargo is sailed around the world on wooden boats.

Imagine a world where the people building these boats are planting 25x more trees than they use.

This is the essence of AstilleroVerde.

Sailcargo, is constructing Ceiba, a 45m wooden, cargo sailing ship and AstilleroVerde are putting 12,500 saplings in the ground. Planting the trees to make ship building sustainable

Our mission is to inspire change in an industry fraught with environmentally damaging practices. We believe in a circular economy and sustainable development and we exist to make those principles a reality.

Our reforestation program is creating a model for carbon offset, ecological restoration, and community empowerment.

We focused our planting efforts on restoring the Tropical Dry Forests surrounding our shipyard home.

Tropical dry forests conservation represents an opportunity for mitigating greenhouse gases. It also represents an opportunity to implement activities related to adaptation, particularly as they have a significant role on the provision of water to local communities facing climate change effects.

REFORESTATION SITES

  1. Finca El Rosario (Sardinal)

  2. El Gran Chaparral (Judas)

  3. Hacienda Santa Juana

  4. Camarita

We focus our reforestation efforts on the most vulnerable middle and lowland areas of the Bellbird Biological Corridor. Our strategy was to work with local farmers to plant and monitor healthy forest systems where communities and nature can mutually thrive.

Species planted are native to the Tropical Dry Forest to restore ecosystems, biodiversity, and regenerate shipbuilding lumber. We also planted flowering trees along the roadway to provide shade and aesthetic value, and fruit trees to promote food security in the local community.
