Other Reforestation and Food Security Programs
SHIPYARD TREE PLANTING
Our first reforestation efforts took place in our home. The shipyard is located in the tropical dry forest landscape of the Punta Morales area. Much of this rare and sensitive ecosystem has been destroyed due to heavy cattle grazing, resulting in a degraded and compacted soil, that is carbon deficient and more vulnerable to the elements. This is what we encountered when we first moved in. Since then, we have been continuously planting native trees and slowly trying to regenerate the land.
TREE DONATIONS
AstiVivero Verde is the name of our tree nursery. Here we grow and propagate different kinds of trees, mainly native fruit species such as avocados, breadfruit and mango, that we will later plant around our shipyard but also donate to our neighbors and extended community. This is a small gesture in the direction of creating more food security for the families living in this area.
Soon we will share more information about the recent expansion of our on-site vegetable garden, tree nursery and seed saving program, and a complete list of the trees planted in the shipyard.
