Food Sourcing
Feeding the 30+ crew of our shipyard is not an easy business! Buying groceries in Punta Morales, especially for this amount of people, is near impossible, never mind sourcing organic produce. We are happy to have the Women’s Association of Punta Morales preparing fresh food for the crew on a daily basis. The shipyard diet is mostly vegetarian and vegan, but one time per week we cook a special dish including meat, fish or seafood. Having a balanced diet, while making conscious choices about where we spend our money, is very important for us.
ORGANIC FOOD COLLECTIVE We are glad to have made a connection with a collective that consolidates and then distributes organic produce from small farms within Costa Rica. Obtaining products from this collective means supporting small, sustainable farms, while providing sustainable and nutritious food to the shipyard crew. This service delivers crates (see picture below) of fruit, vegetables and eggs on a weekly basis, and the team has been thrilled with the variety and high quality of the goods.
OWN GARDEN The shipyard is flourishing, with an ever growing number of edible plants and fruits. Our gardens supply us with coconuts, mangos, papayas, pumpkins, cashews, herbs, spices and much more. We are looking forward to seeing our plants and trees grow to maturity and to harvesting the fruits of our labor.
DAIRY PRODUCTS are sourced from a local and sustainable farmer in Cocorocas, just five minutes away from the shipyard. Sustainable, small scale farmer Lidia provides us with fresh cow milk whenever needed, which our team uses mostly to make homemade cheese.
FISH FROM CAMA-PEZ We buy our fish and seafood from the local, artisanal fishing association CAMA-PEZ in Costa de Pajaros. At the shipyard we mostly eat vegetarian and vegan food, but if there is fish on the table, it has been caught with a hand line, from our friends at CAMA-PEZ.
MEAT we purchase at Vargas in Santa Elena while driving back from a day of work in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, which has the highest quality farm-to-table meats in the region.
GENERAL GROCERIES we buy from a larger, family-owned business in neighboring Morales. Here we buy all groceries which we can not purchase through smaller vendors, like rice, oil and flour.
