Building The Education Center
After our first wooden boat building course at AstilleroVerde, taught in March 2019, we realized quickly that we needed a proper place to host future courses. In this video the participants of the first course, the fishermen from our neighbouring village, Costa de Pajaros, share their arguments of why we needed this center.
Thanks to a private donation, the construction of our educational center for sustainable wooden boat building has been made possible. AstilleroVerde director, Lynx Guimond, has developed simple and efficient, post-beam building methods during his past years of work here in Costa Rica. The use of up-scaled materials and traditional rigging techniques, inspired by tall ship construction, creates a combination of functionality and aesthetics, where the beauty lies in the simplicity of free-form structure and improvised construction.
We wanted to pass on the knowledge of this efficient and sustainable building method to a team of local carpenters, who worked hands-on under the guidance of Lynx, while learning basic post-beam construction techniques, adapted to the conditions of a modern world. Throughout the course, the participants built a multi-purpose structure, that is already hosting courses for the local community and acts as an educational center for our surrounding area.
